About the Programme

Ireland Calling started broadcasting on Access Radio in Auckland in August 1990 and from November 1991 started broadcasting on Access Radio in Wellington and Plains FM in Christchurch. The programme is produced and presented by Oliver Lee and runs for an hour each week between 10-11pm. The programme covers news of events happening within the Irish community throughout New Zealand the latest news from Ireland. Oliver also interviews visiting Irish business people Irish politicians and Irish musicians who visit New Zealand – some of Oliver’s guests over the years include former Irish President – Mary Robinson, former Prime Minister – Albert Reynolds, Irish businessman Dr. Tony O’Reilly and Riverdance founder – Michael Flately and regular visitor to New Zealand – Irish singer Daniel O’Donnell. The programme has a good following throughout New Zealand and while its target audience is Irish or Irish / Kiwis – Oliver meets people from time to time who have no connection with Ireland – yet tune in on a regular basis to hear about the latest events happening Ireland and many also love to hear the Irish music.
