SPOTLIGHT ON: TELL ME MORE Host of Tell Me More, Joa Contreras ‘You know how you spend hours talking with your friends about a random topic? That’s the aim for my show,’ says Joa Contreras, host of Tell Me More, one of the newest shows on the Wellington Access Radio schedule. Tell Me More started life as part of the Gateway programme that the station runs with local high schools around Te Whanganui-a-tara, but has now graduated to a permanent timeslot on the Wellington Access Radio schedule. Joa spends each episode talking to his guests about whatever their interest is – and the topics have ranged from rats, to local body elections, sandwiches, and Phasmaphobia! But whatever the topic, Joa finds that there is always plenty to talk about. ‘Each of my guests has brought a different atmosphere to the show. The idea is that they forget they’re on the radio and feel like they’re having an everyday chat with their friends. Ranting, going off on random tangents, and going down rabbit holes is encouraged! My show focuses on having a good time and the guests have made it what it is.’ The idea behind Tell Me More had already been with Joa for a while, so when he heard from a teacher at Wellington High School that a space was available on the Wellington Access Radio Gateway programme, he immediately signed up and quickly had a list of guests ready to talk. After spending a couple of weeks training at the station, he broadcast his first live episode and hasn’t looked back since. Having finished the Gateway programme, he will now be on air every second Friday night from 6-7pm. For those tuning in, expect to learn something new and to listen to some great music. ‘I think my program gives people a nice moment to hear about something completely random that they didn’t think they would think of that day. My goal is to make a fun show where when people listen, they leave with a smile!’ So, what’s next for Tell Me More? ‘I’m thinking of having another host join me for the show,’ says Joa. ‘I thought that could add a fun dynamic. I’m also planning a few special episodes, such as a karaoke one, and an episode where my guest and I play old records. I’ve had an amazing time at Wellington Access Radio and I’m looking forward to continuing in my new timeslot.’ You can listen to Tell Me More every second Friday from 6-7pm.
